‘Texting while walking, is it as dangerous as texting while driving?’

Mrs Murphy’s Sixth Class took part in the RDS Primary Science Fair on Friday, 13th of January. The fair, now in its eight year, runs alongside the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition and this was Scoil Mhuire’s third time participating.

Sixth Class completed a project entitled ‘Texting while walking, is it as dangerous as texting while driving?’ This project examined the dangers of texting while walking. The girls designed an obstacle course which participants (pupils from Ms Bohan’s and Ms Faughnan’s classes) then completed while sending or reading a text. The results showed that texting while walking makes you much slower and less observant.

One of the most surprising findings was that 20% of participants failed to notice a cyclist who passed them as they completed the course. Therefore the project concluded that texting while walking is potentially very dangerous.

Thank you to Ms Ward who assisted the class with their project and entered them into the competition.

As well as developing the skills involved in carrying out a piece of scientific research, showcasing a class project at the fair also develops students' skills in communicating their interest and knowledge of science to others.

Sixth Class did an excellent job at presenting their project to members of the public as well as to the Science Fair Judges. They also had the opportunity to present their project to the Minister for Health, Simon Harris and the Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Helen McEntee, as well as to Claire O’Reilly from RTE’s Swipe TV.

Throughout the day the girls enjoyed looking at the other primary projects and also got to visit the projects and exhibits at the Young Scientist section.

At the end of the day the girls received a glowing report from the judges and were presented with their Primary Science Fair plaque. A great day was had by all. Congratulations to all our Young Scientists!
