During Science Week 2016 my mom, Patricia, came into our classroom to talk to our class about science. She works in the Department of Agriculture in Celbridge, in the chemistry department. She talked to us about science in everyday life and answered some of the many questions our class had.
She talked about the different types of science. There are three different categories; Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Chemistry has things to do with chemicals. Biology is the study of living orgasms and Physics is to do with energy.
She talked about chemicals in different products that we use regularly, such as sun cream. Then she explained how sun cream worked and told us how effective it is on different skin tones and our melanin.up we talked about hand sanitizer. We all thought that hand sanitizer was okay to use instead of washing our hands. My mom had to disagree with this as hand sanitizers don't clean our hands as well as soap and water.
Another thing which my mom talked about was children's play makeup. These cosmetics contain led which is extremely poisonous. It is dangerous for children to use these as they will put these near their eyes and mouths.
She then talked about dangerous chemicals in food and sweets, but mostly about hydrogenated oils and fats. Hydrogen is a dangerous gas that is cancer causing. She said to always check if our foods contain this and try to avoid it as much as possible.
Lastly she answered all of our questions and inquiries about different things revolving around science.
I'm not just saying this because she is my mom, but she did an excellent job at providing us with great information and facts, and I feel like we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We found the presentation extremely interesting and it opened our mind the to possibility for becoming scientists when we grow up.
