STEM Workshops

Gabrielle Fullam is in Transition Year in St. Josephs. She has been to London studying STEM on a scholarship. She came into our class to teach us about STEM.

The first day
Gabrielle showed us the different uses for technology and computer science. The second week she came in we learnt about engineering. She taught us about aerodynamics. We made different types of paper aeroplanes. The slim-line planes flew better than the ones with big wings.

We learnt about the different forces, like weight and drag that are needed to make an aeroplane or helicopter fly.

We each made our own paper aeroplanes. We tested the different types of aeroplanes and designed them! Some flew better than others because they were slim and sleek, while others spiralled in the air because they were designed differently.

We wondered whether cardboard or paper was better for making planes. We made a plane from cardboard and before testing it we predicted which was better. As it flew we noticed it was more durable and flew further. It was also faster than the paper plane.

It was fun learning about engineering and aerodynamics. We looked forward to the next lesson!
